REVIEW - Mikey Ball & The Company - 'Through The Night' (Album)

Hailing from Bournemouth, Dorset, here in the UK, Mikey Ball & The Company specialise in hard hitting, tuneful rock songs that bring to mind Gaslight Anthem and Springsteen in his rockier moments. The new album from the quartet - 'Through The Night' (released on the 7th October 2022) - has nine tracks of exuberant, assured tuneage that fans of the aforementioned artists will lap-up and with any luck, will receive plenty of the requisite magazine coverage and radio airplay that it deserves. From the punchy guitars that bring in album opener 'Burning All Night' to the closing track 'One More Night''s false ending and 'yeah, yeah, yeah' vocals this is an album that hangs its coat and hat on classic songwriting, tight playing and a sheen that cries out for radio play.

Single 'Burning All Night' opens the album with Thin Lizzy-like twin guitars, Mikey's smoky vocals and the first of a long line of tremendously hooky choruses, even finding time for a key change in the final refrain - all doing much to draw you into the album's exciting, tuneful aura. The other single from the record, 'The Morning', flirts with its Gaslight Anthem influence to fine effect, its intertwining, jangling guitars leading into rousing choruses. The hardest rocking song on the album, 'Runnin'' stomps along on a bed of blazing guitar riffing, while 'Stolen The Show' is a great band performance, all four members firing on all cylinders. Slower tunes too are played with aplomb - 'Unbroken' with its 'Wanted Dead Or Alive' feel, 'King Of The Lonely Throne' with its scintillating guitar solo and 'Out Here Alone' (made for 'lighters-aloft action') shows another side to the band.

'Through The Night' is a fabulous album with rich, full guitars (Mikey Ball, Chris Collins), exemplary bass and drums (Dean Hurst, Will Harris) never missing a beat and Mikey's full- throated vocals enhancing the fine songwriting on show. All nine tracks are tailor-made for the radio and venues of all shapes and sizes and should hopefully see them gain much attention. 'Through The Night' is an album 'pulling out of this town to win' with 'the '59 Sound' ringing in its ears and it should be on your turntable / CD player / mp3 player for weeks and months to come.

'Through The Night' is released on the 7th October 2022 and will be available on all major digital sites. CD versions of the album are available from the band. The band play a launch show for the album on October 7th at 'Canvas' in Bournemouth.
